The Temple of Love 1998
This installation was part of Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater’s Illuminations, an exploration of Women’s Spirituality at the College of St. Catherine.
We Reclaim our Sexuality as Sacred.
In ancient, Matriarchal Times, sexuality and spirituality were one. Sacred Whores lived in the Temple of the Goddess of Love. They had sex with the stranger as an act of worship. This ritual of love making, due to the presence of the divine, transformed them both.
This ritual celebrates our body and spirit are one. All is holy. Body of Earth: rock, plant, animal, our bodies, sex, are all Holy. Our holy bodies are the holy earth are the holy spirit.
We recreate the Temple of the Goddess of Love that rocks to the rhythm of love making activated by ocean, moon, stars, and life. We honor the earth, our bodies, sexuality, passion. We anoint the participants in the name of the Triple Goddess: Mary the Mother, Mary Magdalene the Sacred Whore, and Mary the Virgin, Whole unto Herself.
The audience is invited into the Temple, alone or with a partner.
“Feel yourself growing ever larger and ever deeper until the Self is opened in the blossom of pure relationship to the Moon, the Ocean, the entire living Cosmos. This is the State of Heaven. And it is the state of a flower, a cobra, a jenny-wren in spring, a woman or a man when she knows herself royal and crowned with the moon, with her feet gripping the core of the earth.” -Anonymous
