Alpha Come Home – Fringe Festival 2007
A Clown/Puppet Show with Margo McCreary
Margo’s puppet, Jack the dog and my clown character, Aunt Alpha, also a dog, play out the theme. Paying attention to the senses brings us into the present moment where we experience life at its deepest. This is a path to Bliss. We are told to deny our bodies yet, a spiritual path is living deeply in our bodies. Aunt Alpha is controlling and tries to repress her animal nature. She wants to teach Jack to rise above his nose. “We need to stand up – nose to nose with humans.”
Three Stories
- The Garden of Eden – The Snake tempts us to get on the path to enlightenment. She tempts us to eat the apple, “Taste it for God’s sake!!”
Jack – “This story shows us that God wants us to live in the garden and be a fruit of the earth, enjoy our beautiful bodies and each other.
Aunt Alpha – “No no, this story shows us our desires get us in trouble. Eve smelled that fruit and could not resist. Her body turned against her and made her sin against God. - Eating with a Fork – Alpha tries to teach Jack to eat with a fork. “The fork is a tool that separates us from animals.” Alpha in frustration demonstrates. “Its so elegant to eat with a fork.” She stretches tongue, neck, back legs, and finally falls into the bowl. Disgusted, Alpha licks food off her face, gets taste of food, eats more, tries to hold back, gives in to full enjoyment.
But then, “ OH NO, stop. I’m so disappointed in myself.” (whimpers, humiliated) - Pangu, a Chinese Creation Myth, where the world was created from a cosmic egg.
