American Pie: A Puppet and Mask Show

Anthony is African. Nelly is Irish. In the early 1600’s, each came to the US as an indentured servant. They became part of a community of blacks and whites living and working together. Those in power felt threatened by this unity. So, they passed laws separating people by the color of their skin to destroy the bonds of community. Learning the history of how customs and laws have separated us, can release us from paralyzing fear, guilt, and shame and move us to undo racism.

In a touring show for 4th grade through adults, puppetry is enlisted to teach the history of the creation of racism against African-Americans in this country. This story, based on historical research, is brought to life through marionettes, masks and shadow puppets. Puppets are able to break through resistance and fear by speaking to the mind and the heart.

On Tour

“… haunting, powerful and profound … a much needed and succinct story of America’s early history. The music is sublime, the puppets surreal and skillfully manipulated … has an emotional impact that is immediate and lasting.” Larry Lorenz teacher, Harrison Secondary

“It (American Pie) changed my view of racism.” 11th grader, Cooper High School

“Addressing such a sensitive topic through puppetry arts is both engaging and informative. Each of these is a vital step in eliminating racism.” Cheryl Paschke, arts coordinator, Ramsey

“I like seeing black and white work together.” 5th grader, Bethune

Curriculum

Curriculum based on the same research as the puppet show, was given to teachers before we did a residency. The students could study the history, see the show “American Pie,” and make their own puppet shows on Racism.

It explores US history from the point of view of how and why we have been separated by the color of our skin; from the days when laws separated people to how we are separated today. We look at what policies would make this country a place of liberty and justice for all.
